Amazon likes rolling out new product detail page policies. What’s allowed last year can be a grey area today. What’s considered as best practice last month can be prohibited within the next few weeks. That is why you need to stay up to date with the recent changes in order to avoid problems with your listings.
Generally, Amazon’s terms of service require sellers to provide accurate product information and to comply with their preferred style guides. Recently, Amazon notified sellers about the upcoming changes and restrictions:
- Using HTML, JavaScript, or other code in their product listings Something that has been a widespread practice for many years is now prohibited. Many sellers have used HTML code in their product descriptions to make headlines bold or use bullet points. This practice is no longer allowed and after July 30, 2021 if you still have this HTML in your descriptions the code will break and your descriptions will show the actual HTML code providing a bad experience for Amazon customers.
- Using capital letters throughout the attribute (in the title, bullet points, and description). Capital letters can only be used at the beginning of each word. Many sellers are still using ALL CAPS at the beginning of their bullet points to make them stand out. This is now against the updated TOS and needs to be changed ASAP or it could lead to listing suppression.
Regardless of policy updates, you should always stick to the main goal: provide informative and engaging listing content. Communicate value, get consumers excited, and offer great value.
